| Victory: UK Banks Close Accounts of Islamic "charities" |
|
Lloyds TSB has informed INTERPAL, a leading London based Palestinian NGO that it will no longer transfer funds abroad on its behalf. INTERPAL is outlawed in the United States, Canada and Australia and has been accused of raising funds on behalf of HAMAS and other terror organizations. The British Board of Charities, however, has been reluctant to de-list INTERPAL fearing backlash by the UK's growing Muslim population. Lloyds TSB has finally recognized that transferring funds on behalf of INTERPAL could make it liable for the murder and injuries of Israeli civilians caused by Hamas' terror attacks. As such, Lloyds is now severing its business with INTERPAL. Similarly, Barclay's Bank has announced that it is closing the account of the UMMAH WELFARE TRUST (UWT), an Islamic NGO that provides funds to institutions in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority in the guise of humanitarian aide. Although the UWT has not yet been outlawed it has been identified as transferring funds to INTERPAL and the AL-SALAH ISLAMIC ASSOCIATION which have been named a Specially Designated Global Terrorists by the U.S. government. UWT's website features a tribute to assassinated Hamas founder Sheik Ahmad Yasin and other materials praising the Palestinian "martyrs." When pressed by UWT for its reason for closing the account, Barclays officials stated: "it’s because of risk exposure.” In January 2006, the National Westminster Bank in London was sued by Hamas terror victims in the US for its provision of financial services to INTERPAL. In 2007, NatWest was forced to close the INTERPAL account. No doubt Lloyds and Barclays have now finally gotten the message that providing banking services to suspect Islamic groups have opened them up to massive civil liability by the terror victim suits. Muslim groups in the UK have begun a wide scale protest campaign against the banks alleging that it is becoming more and more difficult to transfer charity funds abroad. |
