Victims of Hezbollah Rockets File Unprecedented Case Against the Central Bank of Iran

February 18, 2010: Eighty five American, Israeli and Canadian victims of Hezbollah rocket attacks have filed an unprecedented lawsuit against the Central Bank of Iran (“CBI”), Bank Saderat Iran of Teheran and Bank Saderat, PLC of London. The suit, Kaplan v. Central Bank of Iran, was filed in federal court in Washington, D.C. and seeks $1 billion in compensatory damages and an unspecified sum of punitive damages.

Shurat HaDin Urges Florida Governor to Commute Sentence of Jewish Death Row Prisoner

February 11, 2010: The director of Shurat HaDin - Israel Law Center, Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, has sent an urgent letter to the Governor of Florida, Charlie Crist, pleading with him to spare the life of Martin Grossman, a Jewish American inmate who has spent the last 25 years on death row.  If the Governor does not commute his sentence,  the State of Florida plans to execute Grossman on Tuesday February 15, 2010.

British High Court Rules to Unfreeze Suspected Islamic Terrorists' Assets

January 27, 2010: England's Supreme Court overruled a decision by the Treasury to freeze the assets of  5 suspected Islamic terrorists. The seizure orders were issued by the British Government in 2006, following a UN resolution calling on member states to undertake steps to obstruct the flow of funds to terrorist organizations. The High Court ruled that the Government was not authorized to freeze the bank accounts and assets without having the approval of Parliament and struck down the Treasury regulations as overreaching.

Court Rules Victims' Suit against Islamic Terror Groups can Proceed

January 14, 2010: For many years we have been urging the victims of terrorist attacks to bring lawsuits against those who devastated their lives and those of their families.  Yet, how does an attorney actually go about serving court papers on a terrorist organization as the law requires to commence a civil action?  You cannot very well travel into the Gaza Strip to hand Hamas the papers. Its far too dangerous to enter Jenin, where Fatah's bomb factories are located, and try to catch them at work.  Moreover, there are not many process servers willing to deliver a complaint to Hezbullah for us in South Lebanon.

Israeli High Court Rejects Shurat HaDin's Arguments on Highway 443

January 6, 2010: This week, in a 38-page decision, the Israeli High Court of Justice handed down a decision that drastically endangers the lives of Israelis who travel along Highway 443, a major traffic artery connecting the Modi'in area to Jerusalem. Shurat HaDin, representing 120 local residents who utilize the road, was a respondent in the case and had argued to the Court that allowing Palestinian traffic, which had been prohibited on Highway 443 since 2002, to resume would give a green light to the terrorists to re-commence their targeting of Israeli vehicles.
